Time flew by like the blackbird that got away and before she knew it or wanted it, they were there. The Moonpool. The place where leaders begin and end their reigns. The clans' connection to StarClan. Lionstar sniffed the air, wondering if anybody else was here to witness her humiliating end. She needed to do this, but she didn't want to. At least she knew the difference between the two. Lionstar sighed as the other cats arrived. " If you don't mind, I'd like to go first and get this over with. " Without waiting for an answer, she stepped forward and stuck her nose out to touch the warm water.

The water shifted slowly from the ripples made by Lionstar's nose. The eight cats were standing around the Moonpool, and one walked forward, standing on the water. It was Shadowstar, her father. Silence, daughter. He stepped closer, small ripples spreading from where his light feet touched the water. You have not failed me, Lionstar. You have made me proud. You made the decision that you felt was right, and that's what really counts. He smiled. I once gave you the life of courage. Now I must take it back. Shadowstar touched noses to the fiery she-cat, filling her with pain and fear. She shriveled backwards from his touch after he moved away and faded into the darkness.
Another cat moved forward, and yet another and another, each one claiming a life that was once theirs until one cat was left. A cat she had never seen before but remembered vaguely from when she gained her lives. The she-cat smiled. I can tell you can't remember me. I'm Tawnycloud, the she-cat you accidentally killed in battle. I frogave you, remember? Now I need to take back the life of justice. She touched noses with Lionstar and let a tear fall to the water below. Just because you lost this life doesn't mean you shouldn't fight for justice in your clan, Lionstep. She smiled slightly and walked away, leaving Lionstep to find herself surrounded by Juniperfeather and Fogdancer when she woke up.

Fogdancer nodded at Lionstar - no, Lionstep - as she awoke from an apparently short slumber. It was sort of creepy. It's okay, Lionstep. You can go home now, if you want. Fogdancer gave her an affectionate nudge on the head and smiled a little. It was a bittersweet moment. The air was still and silent as Fogdancer crouched down to touch her nose to the crisp, refreshing water. THis is it, she thought. You can do it! Just then, she made contact and awoke in the same place as she had been before. I'm ready! Fogdancer shouted into the emptiness. I'm ready to recieve my nine lives! Shapes began coming out of the forest. Eight in total. Her nine lives ceremony was about to begin.

The air shifted slowly as the StarClan cats padded slowly and silently into the clearing. Suddenly the peace was disturbed. A young tom trotted onto the Moonpool, a tinge of excitement decorated across his face. I knew you could do it, Fogdancer. Hiddensky smiled. With this life I give you courage. Use it well in the defense of your clan. He touched his nose to hers and felt her tense up. After pulling back, Hiddensky smiled again before padding back to the line of cats surrounding the water. Next, there was Mistynight, a pretty dark gray she-cat with amber eyes glowing in the darkness. Her face was stoic, but you could tell she was happy at the same time. With this life I give you justice. Use it well as you judge the actions of others. She quickly touched noses to her sister, then back off, joining her brother. Then came Galeheart, the WindClan tom who had tried to woo her. With this life I give you a loyalty to what you know to be right. Use it well to guide your Clan in times of trouble. He padded away, a depressed look on his face. Skyblack was next. The black Adan blue-eyed tom bounded onto the water excitedly. With this life I give you tireless energy. Use it well to carry out the duties of a leader. He touched noses with her, and when he was done, Skyblack bumped her with his head before joining the others. Then came Hollowdarkness followed by her two gray kits. With this life, I give you protection. Use it well to care for your Clan as a mother cares for her kits. The queen touched her nose to Fogdancer and smiled as she padded away. Foxpaw gingerly tested the water before placing his full weight on it. With a small voice, he spoke. With this life I give you mentoring. Use it well to train the young cats of your Clan. He looked up at his former mentor after touching her nose, and then padded back to the rest of the cats. A black tom came forward, a gleam in his eye. Looks like you beat me to it, sis. With this life I give you compassion. Use it well for the elders of your Clan, and the sick, and all those weaker than yourself. He touched his nose to hers before padded back to where he had come from. A black she-cat padded onto the Moonpool with a small smile on her face. It was Mistcatcher. So headstrong, as always. The smile grew a bit. I am so proud of you. Mistcatcher padded closer to Fogdancer and touched her nose to Fogdancer's. With this life I give you love. Use it well, for all the cats in your care. She held her nose there even after the life had been received. With a few happy tears, she walked back to where her children were standing. Then came Shadowstar. The large black tom smiled down on Fogdancer. Memories of taking her family in were coming back to him. It was one of the best choices he had made in his life. Welcome, Fogdancer, the cat I gave another chance to live. You have proved to me that what I did was right for the clan, despite what the others said. I always knew you would make a great warrior one day and another day an even better leader. With this life I give you nobility and certainty and faith. Use it well as you lead your Clan in the ways of StarClan and the warrior code. I hail you by your new name, Fogstar. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants you the guardianship of ShadowClan. Defend it well; care for young and old; honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity. He padded backward and joined the other StarClanners as they began to chant. Fogstar! Fogstar! Fogstar! Fogstar! With a lash of his tail, Shadowstar silenced them. We leave you now; our duty is done. However, yours has just begun. Go now to your clan and become the leader you had always strived to be. May StarClan be ever by your side. Then all of the cats turned and retreated into the darkness, leaving ShadowClan's newest leader to ponder her new responsibilities when she woke up.

Bright green eyes glittered like stars in the night. Dipping her head respectfully towards her former leader, Lionstep, she watched her retreating body fly back towards camp. She was silent for a moment, trapped in her thoughts. She wondered how much the clan would change, if at all, once Fogstar took over completely. She was already starting to miss Lionstep as a leader, though barely 5 minutes had passed since she was demoted. Turning around to moonpool, she regarded it with curiosity. It had been the main source for medicine cats to visit with their ancestors. Padding over to it, she gazed at the dark water for a moment, before lightly touching her nose to the smooth, reflective surface.

Hear Rowanstar talk!
Rowanstar daintily padded into the clearing, a smile on his face as he stepped onto the water. It had been awhile since he was permitted to visit Juniperfeather. Just seeing her face comforted him. The pretty medicine cat had always reminded him of his mate, Tawnypelt. She looked very similar to Juniperfeather, except Tawnypelt had amber eyes. Juniperfeather! So good to see you. It's been awhile, hasn't it? I hear you have a new leader. What was her name? Oh yes, Fogstar. She'll lead your clan through times of triumph, that's for sure. Rowanstar laughed a bit. Then he remembered his job, the reason he had been sent in the first place. Juniperfeather, I was sent to give you some information. Would you like to hear it? |
Rowanstar knew she would say yes, but he had to ask anyway. He didn't need to bombard the medicine cat with news she did not want to hear. [/blockquote]

Juniperfeather's eyes glowed as she saw her visitor. She always did enjoy talking with Rowanstar. "It is good to see you again, Rowanstar. " Sitting, her slightly bushed tail settled casually around her paws. Relief immediately flooded her as the tom told her that Fogstar would be a good leader. Dipping her head in affirmation at his query, she was slightly apprehensive at what news he had come to bring. She had been hearing rumors of her peers lack of belief in Starclan, and she intended to ask Rowanstar later if he knew anything.

Hear Rowanstar talk!
Rowanstar cleared his throat, trying to sound very official during his prophecy. It was quite some news, after all. It wasn't every day a cat was given powers to save their clan from peril. WEll, then. You know the drill. I can't give you ny inforamtion about the prophecy. Here goes nothing. Rowanstar cleared his throat before he began his rant. Watch closely, my dear, and you just might see the sorrel feather disappear. Keep your gaze and it shall return just as a monster from the past comes to ravage all you have ever known. Well, that's all. Any questions that aren't relevant to the prophecy? |
Rowanstar cocked his head to one side, waiting for the questions to come. He knew Juniperfeather was never one to turn down his offer for information, and he had faith in her to figure out his prophecy in time. [/blockquote]

Her previous query forgotten, her eyes widened slightly as she heard the prophecy. She was silent for a moment, and breathlessly scooted forwards a bit, until she was almost nose to nose with Rowanstar. "Sorrel feather, what .. But.. I don't understand! A monster? A human monster?" Confusion swirled in her mind. She tried to make sense of it, replaying his voice in her head endlessly. Suddenly, she remembered what she had come to ask. "Oh! I have heard talk about cats forgetting their ancestors, is this true? I haven't been to the latest gathering to ask." Her wide green eyes stared into his, desperate for answers. She didn't want the clans to fall apart! They only just got here!

Hear Rowanstar talk!
Rowanstar smiled and shook his head. Uh-uh, Juniperfeather. You know the rules. I can't give you any clues about the prophecy. The russet tom nodded his head as he listened to her second question. That's the whole reason you've recieved this prophecy, Juniperfeather. It's not that cats are forgetting about their ancestors; they just refuse to admit they are real. Raw logic is taking lodge in their brains. Before, it was fine, but now it is changing their faith to the 'realization' that dead cats are just dead cats. WE would send a sign, but with so little power throughout the clans, it's just too hard. Add that to the fact that some wisecrack would probably come up with an excuse for it. THis prophecy holds the answer, Juniperfeather. If you can crack the code, ShadowClan will prevail. |
Rowanstar stood up from his seat. His time here wa snearly up. Are there anymore questions before I go? I can't stay here forever, you know. [/blockquote]

Juniperfeather took a small step backwards as she relaxed a bit more. She would need to tell Fogstar about this. Cocking her head to the left side a bit, she dipped her head towards Rowanstar respectfully. She had forgotten that he could not stay with her forever. Coming to moonpool was both a burden and an excitement. She almost always forgot that they were StarClan, and not cats of her own clan. Despite the strange surroundings, it was incredibly easy to converse with these cats as if they were like her. "Thank you for telling me this." Finally saying her goodbyes, she touched her nose to Rowanstar for a short moment and bade him farewell. It was time to return to her reality.
Awakening, she stood on unsteady feet, as if she were waking up from a dream. Her head was muddled from both Rowanclaw's message and her own emotions and thoughts attached to it. She wasn't sure what he meant by monster. Perhaps Fogstar would know about this. With this thought, bright green eyes searchingly wandered through the night in a half-hearted attempt to find her newly appointed leader.

Fogstar awoke with a smile on her face. She had finally made it. She was leader of ShadowClan! Fogstar made a silent promise to herself to protect the clan with everything she had, especially the nine lives she was recently given. Suddenly, she was aware of Juniperfeather's awakening. Her face said everything. THere was obviously something important she needed to tell Fogstar. Yes, Juniperfeather? What did you find out? Fogstar lashed her tail. It was her duty to know these things. What if soemthing terrible was ging to happen to ShadowClan, and it was all her fault! Fogstar couldn't bear to think about it, so she lashed her tail impatiently as she waited for her medicine cat to speak.

Wide eyes narrowed in a frown of concentration. Thinking back to her meeting with Rowanstar, she could almost feel his presence next to her. Shaking it off, she recited the prophecy just as he told it to her.
Watch closely, my dear, and you just might see the sorrel feather disappear. Keep your gaze and it shall return just as a monster from the past comes to ravage all you have ever known.
Her eyes returning their focus, the shining globes were fixed on her leader. She wanted very much for Fogstar to figure out what this meant, and immediately be able to solve it. She wondered for a moment what Lionstep would do in this situation, and scolded herself for having such thoughts.

Fogstar cocked her head to the side. It was obviously a prophecy of some sort, adn like most prophecies, it was hard to decipher. Sorrel feather... Why do I feel like I should know what that is? She shook her head, focusing on Juniperfeather. Her amber eyes glimmered as she spoke. I feel like I should know what the sorrel feather is supposed to stand for, but I just can't figure it out. She shurgged and looked up at the sky. The sun was setting. Juniperfeather, we'd better get back soon. I need to announce a new deputy before moonhigh. She turned her back to the medicine cat, padding slowly towards the camp. All the way home, she thought about that persistent sorrel feather.
//We should wrap this up.//
